Leadership
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is governed by the Oklahoma Transportation Commission. The Governor and both the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Oklahoma and the Pro-Tempore of the Oklahoma Senate appoint members to the Commission.
The Commission consists of 9 members, eight representing the Departments geographic districts and one appointed at-large. The Governor is a ex-officio member of the Commission*. The Commission provides oversight, approves budgets items, awards contracts and establish agency policy.
The Agency is supervised by the Secretary of Transportation, a member of the Governor's Cabinet.
Responsibilities
ODOT primary role is the maintenance of over 30,000 Miles of Roadway in Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation has some other responsibilities that fall outside of road maintenance.
Funding of public transportation systems in municipalities with less than 50,000 inhabitants.
Safety Inspections of the states 3,800 at-grade rail/road intersections.
Administers State and Federal funds for the local road projects at the County and City level.
Maintenance of 6,800 bridges across Oklahoma.
Safety oversight of Oklahoma City's Light rail service
Maintenance of over 180 miles of state owned railway.
Jointly manages the Amtrak Heartland Flyer service with the Texas Department of Transportation
Funding for ODOT comes most from legislative appropriations, income tax and Gasoline/Diesel excise tax
